In a inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

A Historic Figure

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the public whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting counsel to temper hopes, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not compromise my principles for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these services may prove difficult to secure. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
